Any charity work you do is work well done. Sometimes though, it’s fun to mix things up. The following three charities are fairly small and not well-known, but they have great missions and do tremendous work.
The Critter Connection
Did you ever wonder what happens to unwanted guinea pigs? You’ll be happy to know that there is a charity specifically designed to rescues and rehabilitates abandoned or neglected guinea pigs. According to its website, the Connecticut-based charity has sheltered more than 700 guinea pigs since it began in 2004. These pets were either abandoned due to owner surrender, unexpected pregnancy or government-sanctioned seizure.
Child’s Play
Child’s Play is a charity designed to supply games and toys to children who are in therapy facilities or hospitals. Children often spend countless hours waiting and doing nothing while in these facilities. Child’s Play provides these children with age-appropriate entertainment in order to distract them from their pain. Another goal of Child’s Play is to encourage interaction with peers, family and friends through these toys. Child’s Play also receives cash donations throughout the year. With those cash donations, we purchase new consoles, peripherals, games, and more for hospitals and therapy facilities
Project Linus
Project Linus, named after Linus Van Pelt from the Peanuts comic strip who was always carrying a blanket, seeks to provide homemade blankets to needy children. You can donate to Project Linus either by monetary donations or by actually knitting a blanket. According to their website, their mission is two-fold. First, Project Linus strives to “provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.” Secondly, the charity hopes to “provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.”
Are you looking to change it up a little when it comes to your philanthropy efforts? Try donating to or participating in one of these three wacky but important charities.
